Body Mass Index

Is body weight (mass) alone is not a clear indicator of good health?

Body weight (mass) alone is not a clear indicator of good health as it does not differentiate between body fat and lean body mass. It is the excess body fat that correlates with increased risk of chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes or fatty liver.

Body composition analysis allows to determine the amount of fat and lean muscle mass in the human body to determine the health risks. There are many different ways to measure body composition, including:

Skinfold calipers: This method uses calipers to measure the thickness of skinfolds at different sites on the body. The measurements are then used to estimate body fat percentage.

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA): This method uses a small electric current to measure the resistance of the body to electrical current. The resistance is then used to estimate body fat percentage.

Hydrostatic weighing: This method measures the body’s density by weighing the body underwater. The density is then used to estimate body fat percentage.

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA): This method uses X-rays to measure the bone mineral density and body fat percentage.

However, it is important to note that BMI can also be roughly estimated by using height to weight ratio. The best way to determine your body fat percentage is to have it measured by a healthcare professional.
